Mighty Book of Boosh up for an award

The Mighty Book of Boosh has been nominated for a British Book Award - Best Non-Fiction! Excellent news - if you loved the book as much as we did, please go to the voting website British Book Awards Voting Website to vote for the Boosh. The closing date for the competition is midnight on Saturday 28th March. The awards will be televised on Watch TV on Sunday 5th April.

Boosh TV shows to get US premiere and DVDs to get US release

Finally, the Boosh DVDs will be getting a US release. This ties in with the launch of The Mighty Boosh on American channel, Adult Swim at 1am on 29th March.

It has just been officially annouced that Noel Fielding will be hosting one of the series of Teengage Cancer Trust gigs at the beginning of April at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

We can confirm that Noel Fielding will take over as team captain from
Bill Bailey for three weeks in the new series of Never Mind The
Buzzcocks, which will be on telly in November.

was delighted to be his first choice. Only after I agreed to do it did
I realise that I was actually 104th on the list behind Andrew, his
long-eared rabbit. Although, to be fair, Andrew is on fire at the

Episode 1 of Series 3 of the Mighty Boosh, EELS, is still set to hit
BBC Three screens at 10.30pm on Thursday 15th November. We've seen a
copy and it sees the welcome return of some popular characters from
both previous series, as well as a performance from our very own Queen
of the Mods as part of the Hoxton Elite. There is also a new song
which will stick in your minds and drive you mad.

Rich Fulcher, Matt Berry. Simon Farnaby, Waen Shepherd and some other
comedy stars will appear in Golf War on E4 at 11.30pm on Monday 5th
November. It is a sitcom about two rival golf clubs and promises to
be very funny.

Rich Fulcher appears live on Thursday 1st November at Clarks' at The
Albany in London 020 7387 5706. The night is hosted by Dan Clark
(Johhny Two Hats in series 1) and always sells out quickly.

Hello team boosh.
Everything is now in place for the launch of the fan club... from this moment forward we won't be using the words "fan" or "club" we shall be using the term Modwolves, as decreed by Noel and Julian. For those of you who have listened to the first podcast, I am afraid that Julian's offer to invite you round his and cook you chili if you become a member has not yet been secured. But there are other exciting things going on and the Boosh are currently designing our logo which will arrive on your doormat in the form of a beautiful embroidered patch which you can sew to whatever the hell you like.
There are special provisions for non UK fans so everyone can join. The PO Box is open from this monday so please don't put your applications in the post today - wait til tomorrow. Also the sooner you send your application the better, then I can get a good idea of how many patches/badges we'll all be needing...
So, I think that's all you need to know... don't forget to follow the instructions carefully.

It is my great pleasure to announce that no only will the first themightyboosh.co.uk maiden podcast be online in a matter of hours - all 10 glorious minutes (not bad for a first go).

Yesterday was unprecedented because I didn't meet Noel and Julian just the once, oh no, I had to go back and see them a second unplanned time - at very short notice. They are now going to feature in the final of three podcasts that I am producing for Amnesty and Channel 4 - they should be available on both websites for download and I will let you all know when. They manage to skip the issues behind Amnesty and focus solely on hair straighteners etc... getting right down to the gritty realism of world politics.

Also, the name for the fan club has been set in stone by the boys - it is simple yet effective. We shall be known as Mod Wolves. Much like some bands, there will be no "The" in front of our name, we are simply Mod Wolves. Noel and Julian are working on the logo - which will be magically turned into an embroidered patch for you to sew to your clothes as you so desire. So the PO box is being set up and I shall unleash the application form and further details in the coming week or two. Hooray.

I should be getting a few exclusive clips (exclusive to this site only - until someone manages to copy them, i daresay) of the live show from the DVD distributors... not sure when but I shall let you know. I have such a terrible memory.

News from Noel...

I'm not going to transcribe my chat with Noel word for word just yet. Most of what we talked about was about the Live DVD and the tour so I will do that some point very soon - including the story of the time that Noel was so exhausted that Dave had to go round and help him pack. The rest was just chatting about the fan club and that is being sorted out soon. Despite there not being an official Boosh tour til late next year, there will almost certainly be a few fan club gigs... work in progress stuff. That's just something we're talking about.

I am working on a podcast site for the Edinburgh festival which led me onto ask the boys the other day if we could do one for the website - maybe a monthly update and they said they'd love to so fingers crossed. I'll nab them if they come up to visit Edinburgh but even though they'd like to, it probably won't happen. It'll be after August though cos I'll be in Scotland for the festival. But that's something to look forward to. As ever you'll all be the first to know about any Boosh news.

So here we go... bullet points, news from Noel.

Live DVD out around November - already edited.
- Mixture of two shows but more or less the first one (JC can breath a sigh of relief!)
- Spirit of Jazz (who got up to go to toilet) from last Brixton show made it to the final cut!
- Mobbing at the end of the last show has been kept in

- Extras - filmed by 2 girls who did a film about the Mystery Jets0
- Lots of fans feature in the extras - also during Boosh getting in/out of Booshmobile sequence!
- Possibly putting one of the warm up gigs as a DVD extra as for some of them - esp the first one, practically none of the material made it to the final show.

- Were offered a tour of the same show
- Would like to go to New York/LA/San Francisco/Australia
- No tour until just before Xmas last year (it'll take them til then to recover - Noel still struggles to make a cup of tea without a round of applause!)

- Boosh are designing the logo and thinking of a name
- possibility of fan club only CD/DVD (an idea I stole from the Blur FC)
- up for fan club gigs - work in progress for next series/Noel stand up
- Zooniverse patches may well be part of the membership... instead of the membership card

(Oh and the moustache is coming of in the next week or so... people are calling Noel Dartanian.. ha ha!)

London DVD Signing

The boys are doing another DVD signing when they return to London at the end of the month.

Due to limited time available, entry to the queue will be restricted to fans with an official wristband only. 400 wristbands will be available with purchase of a Mighty Boosh DVD from the store on the day of the event. One wristband per person only, no reservations, on a "first come first served" basis only. Please note The Mighty Boosh will only be able to sign DVD sleeves.

Important Announcement re Robots "After Show Parties"

Message from Noel and Julian & Boosh tour promoters

The Robot In Disguise shows have got out of hand and promoters are selling them as Boosh aftershows with the Boosh's name on the tickets.

Althought the Mighty Boosh do support the Robots In Discguise tour they cannot guarantee they'll be at any of the shows so please do not buy tickets just for the chance of getting a glimpse of Noel and Julian cos they might not be there and probably won't be.

Please don't buying these tickets because you think the Boosh are going to be there, please buy tickets because you want to see the Robots In Disguise. If the Boosh do pop into the gig it will be a bonus. The promoters shouldn't be selling tickets saying that the Boosh are going to be there. The dates have just been scheduled to coincide with the Boosh tour.

If you want to query any tickets you have already bought then you need to speak to the promoters at the individual venues as the promoters didnt ask Boosh permission.

I hope this doesn't cause too much disappointment - obviously it will but anyone who has seen the Robots will tell you that these shows are well worth going to. They will be full of Boosh fans so it'll be a good place to have meet ups. I have said this to anyone who has asked me. It is by no means a guarantee of seeing the Boosh. They will have just been on stage for 2 hours already before these aftershows.

Please be aware that this mix-up has been nothing to do with Noel & Julian or their tour promoters or Robots In Disguise.

Musically akin to the the bastard son of David Byrne and Clinic, these foot-stomping Wirralites explode with a class and sonic mastery that is way beyond their tender years.

Recent limited-edition single 'Why Don't You Fix It?' has been described by Rough Trade as "the best 3 minutes and 20 seconds we've heard in some time" and we can't disagree.

In fact, their whole set rips your ears off, tailors them into shoes, throws them on your feet and spins you wildly across the dancefloor.

The SCCC really are that good.

Meet the Mighty Boosh & Special Guests

London needs to brace its self as The Boosh are set to hit Borders bookshop (203 Oxford Street, London, W1) on 25th August at 7pm.

Julian and Noel will be in store signing copies of The Mighty Boosh on BBC Audio’s triple-disc CD (£15.99) which contains all six episodes from the BBC Radio 4 series as well as an exclusive interview and unheard footage.

Julian and Noel won’t be making the journey from The Boosh to Oxford Street alone though. Accompanying them will be the wise old ape Bollo and Naboo (Mike Fielding), the mystical Shaman and kiosk-vendor.

Howard and Vince, two workers in a run-down zoo, are often called upon to put their jobs before their pride. That means dressing up as animals and sitting in cages because their boss, American entrepreneur Bob Fossil, can barely afford any real animals (or even remember what species they are).

Boys who never grew up

LIKE all the best heroes, Julian Barratt doesn't actually look like one. He needs a shave, his loud yellow shirt needs ironed or, better still, set alight, and his wheat beer is starting to divert the afternoon down a surreal path. Meanwhile, his friend Noel Fielding, who can get surreal without the help of wheat beer, won't stop wittering about shamen and mermen and people made of biscuits.

The last time we saw the pair on TV was in Nathan Barley, another of Chris Morris's acid satires on the media. Fielding had a small part as a nocturnal devotee of screechy techno but Barratt was the hero of the piece - Dan Ashcroft - a journalist who wrote about "The Rise Of The Idiot" in a magazine run by trendy twerps too self-obsessed to realise they were the inspiration, and the targets.

An emblematic image, featured in every episode, had Barratt wearing an expression of doom, shoulder hunched against a heavy metal door, as he prepared to enter a 'workplace' full of imbeciles in tiny cardboard trilbies, pedalling around on tiny plastic tractors. If this isn't the comedy of the year, I'll eat my tiny cardboard trilby.

Nathan Barley was a highly useful bit of freelancing for Barratt and Fielding. Their day job is as The Mighty Boosh, the comedy double-act voted Perrier Best Newcomers at the 1998 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Last year they made the jump to the small screen, and a second series starts this month.

In their own strange way, The Mighty Boosh are heroes too. Their comedy is very much an acquired taste - think Goons, think Python, think sillier - but the fact they are allowed access to Tellyland at all should be welcomed by everyone. The idea of Barratt and Fielding playing zoo keepers who desert their posts to go on quests to the Arctic and beyond to encounter chamois-leather monsters and box killer kangaroos may not rock your world - but it does make a change from Big Brother.

When The Mighty Boosh first appeared on the box, they were viewed as a reaction against reality television. Was keeping it surreal part of the plan? "Subconsciously, I suppose, yeah," says Barratt, 36. "Those docusoaps can be brilliant, although the level of acting in them is incredible now. But we've only ever wanted to do the Boosh.

"If you've got a budget for a TV show, you shouldn't just film yourself standing in your front room in your underpants, you should make something beautiful," adds Fielding, 30. And the Boosh's idea of beauty? Man walks into a pub. And he's made of crackers.

Barratt is tall, Fielding short - but comparisons with Little & Large end there. Fielding is something beautiful too: crow's beak for a nose, rock star hair, but that of a girl rock star; he could be the great, lost fifth member of The Runaways.

In different parts of the country - Barratt hails from Leeds, Fielding is a Londoner - they grew up watching the same telly programmes and thrilled to the same oddness.

Barratt: "I loved Monkey."

Fielding: "Me too. All those weird demons. And The Monkees."

Barratt: "Rupert The Bear... and remember Raggedy, the grumpy wood troll? That pervaded my subconsciousness."

Fielding: "The Goodies, all those Cocteau films that were so magical. There's a bit of Sinbad in our show... Jason & The Argonauts... except there are no Greek warriors, just these complete idiots. One of them is obsessed with his hair and the other is a neurotic jazz freak."

The characters that Fielding and Barratt play in The Mighty Boosh are extensions of their own personalities. Back in Leeds, Barratt was that neurotic jazz freak. "School didn't work out for me and I didn't want to do a normal job," he says. "Between the ages of 16 and 20 I was in lots of weird jazz-fusion bands and I became obsessed with playing the guitar really, really fast. In the new series, I've got about 18 solos so I'm pretty chuffed about that."

Barratt and Fielding not only share comedy influences, they also have fathers who dreamed of exotic lives far removed from the nine-to-five. But when those dreams didn't happen, they wouldn't die. They were transferred to their sons, who were encouraged to be daring while other boys met with parental obstruction.

Barratt again: "My dad really wanted to be a musician - like Noel's dad, he loves Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart - but he ended up becoming a teacher. Obviously he wanted me to do well academically, but when I announced I was going to try music he said: 'Go for it.'"

Fielding: "My dad nearly became a professional footballer; he had trials with Chelsea. After that he never stuck at jobs for long and he and my mum were much more interested in hanging out with their friends and throwing wild parties for all these weird folk and there would be drugs flying everywhere. It was all pretty bohemian, I suppose.

"I was always painting and drawing as a kid. When I was 13 I told my dad I'd rather kill myself than do an ordinary job. He vaguely muttered something about how I'd need to earn a living somehow, but he's been totally behind me, forking out money he didn't really have to send me to university. Every other comedian I've met had to fight their parents to be allowed to do this but mine have been brilliant."

So how have Fielding and Barratt rewarded their fathers for their bold support? By putting them in the show. Barratt's dad Andy is a shamen and, more bizarrely, Fielding's old man Ray plays bushy-browed balladeer Chris de Burgh, although the guest turns did prompt the funsters to waver from their usually unshakeable belief in Booshian madness.

"After a while you become inured to the process of doing TV, and on the day my father was filming his bit I was like: 'Great, he'll be a right laugh.' But we'd dressed him in this weird raffia suit and everyone was staring at him and he looked really vulnerable. I thought: 'Oh Dad, what have I done to you?'"

THE FAVOURITE WORD OF The Mighty Boosh is "weird", but they try not to overdo it. "What we didn't want," says Barratt of their show, "was a weird world full of weird people in weird hats doing weird things." Believe it or not, there is method to their weirdness. The show has transferred to TV under the tutelage of Steve Coogan's Baby Cow production company. "Despite all the weirdness, Steve could see that at its core there was this relationship between two guys," adds Fielding.

And despite all the weirdness, women like The Mighty Boosh. Audience research reveals a large female following and also - well weird, this - a sizeable seafaring one. But even if you don't like their comedy, you must allow yourself a smirk at the thought of comedians like Fielding and Barratt confronting, and confounding, focus groups and suited, straight-thinking TV execs. What do they think a psychologist would make of their show? "That we haven't grown up?" suggests Fielding. "I think it's important to play all the time," adds Barratt. The sort of ideas you have when you're in that state... a lot of people are frightened to access that part of themselves, they don't want to be silly anymore."

The Mighty Boosh do, and all those women and sailors and pre-eminent comedy forces such as Steve Coogan and Chris Morris love them for it. And so do their dads.

British rockers RAZORLIGHT have swapped the stage for the screen and will make their acting debut in a sketch for acclaimed British comedy THE MIGHTY BOOSH.

The London group will make a cameo role in the second series of the hit TV show which features British comedians NOEL FIELDING and JULIAN BARRATT.

Despite not having any lines to learn for the scene, drummer ANDY BURROWS admits the group were jittery with nerves before their small screen debut.

He says, "We got on set and they both had these insane costumes on and were painted up.

"There were no words in our scene but it was set in a desert.

"We have got metal detectors and are looking for something, but until I actually see it in context I don't exactly know.

"We got nervous - it was our first acting role, but it was great. They were so lovely."

The GOLDEN TOUCH band struck up a rapport with the funnymen after becoming huge fans of the show's first series and have asked both comedians - who also pen all the theme music to the series - to guest on their follow-up album to their successful debut UP ALL NIGHT.

The episode starring Razorlight will be screened on British digital channel BBC3 later this year (05).

Baby Cow Productions and BBC THREE are pleased to announce the transmission date for the second series of THE MIGHTY BOOSH, the comedy show written by and starring multi-award winning comedians Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding. The new series will transmit for six weeks, every Tuesday night at 23.00 from 26 July on BBC THREE.

This time around, THE MIGHTY BOOSH sees the return of our intrepid heroes Vince Noir (Noel Fielding) and Howard Moon (Julian Barratt) stepping out of the Zoo-Niverse to embark on a series of brand new adventures.

The Call of The Yeti
During a break at Kodiak Jack’s reclusive log cabin, Kodiak tells Howard of the mythical Yeti that lives in the forest. His desire for fame and fortune gets the better of him and Howard trades Vince for directions to the Yeti’s lair. However, things don’t go according to plan when the Yeti’s kidnap Howard and Vince is propositioned by a maniac trapper.

The Priest and The Beast
Vince and Howard are struggling to find the new sound needed to secure them a record deal with Pie Face Records. They enlist the help of Naboo who tells them the tail of musical gurus Rudy Van Disarzio and Spider Dijon who only found their new sound after saving a town full of women from the evil Betamax bandit.

Nanageddon
In an attempt to impress two goth girls, the boys stage a séance in their front room. Trouble ensues when they summon the most evil demon known to man, an old lady called ‘Nanatoo’, who does a runner with their flat-mate, the Shaman Naboo’s, most magic book. Naboo is livid and gets immediately drunk leaving it up to Howard and Vince to find the demon, retrieve the book and prevent Nanageddon.

Old Gregg The Funky Merman
Following a poorly received gig, the boys decide to skip town for a bit. They take in a spot of fishing on Black Lake where angry at Vince’s fishing success, Howard sends him back to the local pub. Whilst Vince swaps tales with the locals at The King Prawn’s Head, Howard is abducted by ‘Old Gregg’, the eerie merman who haunts the Lake’s waters.

Whilst marooned on a desert island, Howard sees an opportunity to nurture his poetry whilst Vince takes to making bamboo fashion lines. However, with no-one to talk to but each other and nothing to eat but rancid coconuts, they soon find themselves in the midst of a coco-nightmare.

Fountain of Youth
When another bad gig is put down to Howard being old and past it, the boys use Naboo’s magical amulet to transport themselves to the Fountain of Youth, where they hope to turn back the clock. However, to get there they must first go through the Desert of Nightmares where they encounter an evil cockney Sultan, a rebel army and ‘Sandstorm’, a beast made of sand that is incapable of love.

Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding (Writers and Performers)
Vince Noir and Howard Moon were first brought to life by Barratt and Fielding in the upstairs room of a North London pub back in the late ‘90’s. They made their Edinburgh Festival debut in 1998 in The Mighty Boosh, winning the coveted Perrier Award for Best Newcomer. Further Edinburgh live shows followed with the Perrier Award nominated Arctic Boosh (1999) and Auto Boosh (2000) which, following a sell out run at The Melbourne International Comedy Festival, won the Festival’s prestigious Barry Humphries Award.

In 2001 Barratt and Fielding were commissioned by the BBC to write and star in The Boosh, a six part comedy series for Radio 4 based upon the adventures of Vince and Howard. The series went on to win The Douglas Adams Award for innovative comedy writing. Having seen and loved their Edinburgh shows, Steve Coogan and Henry Normal then set to work securing the Boosh’s first TV commission. In 2004 Baby Cow produced the first series of The Mighty Boosh, which aired on BBC THREE in May of that year moving to BBC2 in the November. Bringing the magical exploits of Vince and Howard into the living rooms of everyday folk, the series was nominated for Best Comedy Newcomer at the 2004 British Comedy Awards and was instantly re-commissioned by the BBC for a second series.

Barratt and Fielding’s additional credits include the BAFTA nominated short film, Sweet and most recently, Chris Morris’ C4 series Nathan Barley.

King’s additional credits include the Perrier Award nominated live show, Garth Marenghi’s Fright Night, the Perrier Award winning follow up, Garth Marenghi’s Netherhead and the resulting C4 TV series, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace on which he worked as Associate Director. Prior to starting work on the second series of THE MIGHTY BOOSH, Paul worked on the pilot of The Zeppotron Sketch Show.

Spencer Millman (Producer)
Spencer Millman is the co-writer and producer of the multi-award winning, BAFTA nominated comedy series Bo’ Selecta! Since co-developing the series with its star Avid Merrion back in 2002, Millman has produced three series of the show, a Christmas special, three DVD’s, a Christmas single and the accompanying music video. His previous credits include C4’s, Does Doug Know, Daisy Daisy, Meet Ricky Gervais and The 11 O’Clock Show as well as ITV’s, The Frank Skinner Show. Millman has recently returned from the states where he has been writing and producing, Daisy Does America, a TBS pilot for Courteney Cox and David Arquette’s production company, Coquette Productions.

Tim Hope (Visual Effects Director)
Tim Hope is the multi-award winning animator/director of The Wolf Man. His additional credits include Minema Cinema and a number of commercials and promo videos for bands including Beta Band, One Giant Leap and Coldplay.

BBC Three is to be first UK channel to premiere content on broadband

BBC Three announced today it will be the first UK channel to premiere its programmes on broadband when it streams the new series of hit comedy ‘The Mighty Boosh’ from July 19 - a week ahead of its transmission on July 26.

‘The Mighty Boosh’ is the first of a number of original and award-winning BBC Three comedies that will be premiered via broadband in the coming months. Audiences will be able to watch streamed programmes when they want on the BBC Three website [bbc.co.uk/bbcthree] and catch up if they’ve missed an episode. All episodes will be available to view for up to seven days after the final programme of the series transmits on BBC Three.

The service further enhances BBC Three’s growing reputation as an innovative and mature digital brand, as the channel seeks to exploit cross-platform opportunities to offer viewers more control and greater access to its programmes.

Jana Bennett, The BBC’s Director of Television, says: “The broadband premiere of ‘The Mighty Boosh’ is a significant step forward in offering our audiences even greater value in a changing television world. Funniest in London

Noel and Julian have made no 30 in Time Out list of
the 50 funniest Londoners. There is a large picture
of them on p31 of this week's issue which came out
yesterday.

I'd have emailed to let you know yesterday but I was
on the set of the second series of The Mighty Boosh!
I'm not allowed to say anything just yet but it seems
likely that the show will be on over the summer as
they are already editing rushes from the earlier
weeks.

While I was there I saw a rough cut of an episode
which involves a yeti. That is all I can say just
now. Keep checking the website for more details as
and when I am given the nod from the boys.

There will be a mini-report of my visit to the set on

Dame Edna Everage, SpongeBob SquarePants and Eddie Izzard are among the acts heading for the Montreal Just For Laughs festival in July.

For the first time, one of the event’s huge, televised gala showcases will be dedicated to the visiting British comics.

Hosted by Lenny Henry, the show will feature stand-ups Lee Mack, Noel Fielding, Adam Bloom, Danny Bhoy, Alan Carr and Rhod Gilbert, plus sword swallower Miss Behave and sketch troupe The Hollow Men, whose Comedy Central series recently aired in the US.

Festival chief Bruce Hills said: “Comics from the UK and Ireland have always had a very important role in the Just For Laughs Festival, this year their profile will be higher than ever.”

Yes, there will be a DVD of series 1 available soon. As yet we have no date but the BBC will be releasing it sometime after the launch of the second series.

We are still writing the second series and imagine it will take another month before we start production. From then it will take a while to reach your screens. There will be meetings, discussions, we will be forced to take the best bits out and finally it will be shown, at irregular times across the schedule.

For any of you who might be wondering why the first series disappeared from the schedules BBC2 has decided it will show the last 3 episodes of the first series in the near future. Again we have no dates. We are not very good at dates

Set in 1972, and taking a non-stop all-singing and dancing, star spangled musical leap around the biblical story of the Nativity. With a comic twist, this familiar story is brought to life through the eyes of the Innkeeper.

Caught on the edge of despair, the Innkeeper contemplates suicide, following a dreadful year of business brought on by rival motel owner, Tony Iscariot. His attempt is stalled by a voice from above who points out that King Herod is coming to town. The Innkeeper bursts into action determined to be the first to cash in on the great arrival.

Meanwhile, the Innkeepers wife, Ruth, is feeling angry and ignored as the Innkeeper hurries both family and guests out in preparation for Herod's arrival. As Ruth turns to Iscariot for comfort, back at the Inn there's a knock at the door. The Innkeeper opens it to a weary Joseph and Mary, and after a bit of persuasion he lets them rest in his shed.

I notice the polos obsession is intensifying!

J we should get sponsorship or something shouldnÂ¹t we
N we tried but they said no
J its like with the white stripes when they did that video and it was Lego
and they said to Lego do you want to get involved in this cos its going to
be a video and they said no, we only do stuff for 7 o 13 stars, and then the
video came out and it was like a massive hit and then Lego rang up and went
Â maybe we could get involved and they went get lostÂ too late.
N we used to eat them
J we used to use them to make props when we were making stuff on stage
N IÂm trying to think why I used them Â cos they were in our house
J there were those big plastic ones that we used to use
N there were some in the house that IÂ¹d moved into and I needed to really
quickly make some eyes cos i was trying to makeÂ TommyÂ¹s mask. Do you
remember that? I was trying to paint and it looked shit and then I was
thinking I need to rings or something and then I saw these polos and thought
oh theyÂ¹re great. And then we started having jokes about the fact that they
were polos and people started going are they polos and really laughing. And
in the reviews people kept going polos for eyes and minty vision and all
that stuff so then we started using them all the time like Pedro he had
orange ones cos they brought out the orange ones
J and then in the show we decided to try and keep that in it and even with
Rudi we did that on stage so that he could be behind the board and we
thought well whatÂ¹s the point in changing it even if its TV we may as well
just have it. Just to maintain some of the stage stuff
N just a lot of things like that are to do with the look like the catfish
tendrils occasionally sort of quite like the polos for eyes and a few things
like that weÂ¹re trying to keep as little motifs just so its got a bit of a
weird look and I really like that all that artificial kind of weird stylised
stuff. Actually all the stuff that people when we first started said
wouldnÂ¹t work on TV., all worked on TV. They were going yeah but whatÂ¹s that
going to look like on telly? ItÂ¹ll look shit and we go it looks great, itÂ¹s
the best stuff and pretty much everything that everyone ever said to us
wouldnÂ¹t work worked. Talking to cameras great, having costumes made out of
bits of glue and wood is great, you know, all those things, so I think
thatÂ¹s another thing in this series, well just do exactly. We did kind of do
that in the first series but I think we know what sort of techniques work
better now.

Did you have much input in set design/costume

N yeah a lot, its great actually. ThereÂ¹s a woman called Christine whoÂ¹s a
really great make up lady and weÂ¹ve worked with her before. SheÂ¹s amazing,
we wouldnÂ¹t even want to do a show without her now cos sheÂ¹s so good, she
really understands it and we work really well together. I had loads of
drawings and she did loads of drawings and on the day sheÂ¹ll let you get
involved just helping out, that needs to be a little bit more like this.
Brian ferry we did on the day, just got Julian in, we were trying to make it
in make up look like Nigel's animation and she was just kind of let just
stick bits of the magazine on his face so we just did it there and then on
the day didnÂ¹t we and then Julian had an idea to keep the price tag on which
was just a bit of paper that we were using, so it was all pretty much an
hour before we went on and actually one of the most successful costumes
probably. When we did it in rehearsal there was only blue gaffer tape on
the side so I gave Julian blue eyebrows but not cos I thought blue was good
but cos there wasnÂ¹t any black and so we though that looks quite good
actually. I think IÂ¹d like the costumes to be more like that this time Â I
think they look much more interesting. When its all too good it just looks
like a film or advert and you cant compete with those things cos their
budgets are massive. The only way you can compete is by having quite lo-fi
stuff that looks goodÂ

Do you still have the old props from the live shows?

J WeÂ¹ve got some yeah. When we got back from Australia and had a look at
them there were all sorts of creatures in them.
N Yeah there were all spiders in them, We brought them back from Australia
and did a gig here and when we got them out there were all little spiders
crawling out of them.
J we were putting the masks on and all spiders crawling up your nose

It was funny to watch the show and spot your friends and family and other
familiar Boosh faces.

N thatÂ¹s whatÂ¹s good about it in a funny way. As soon as it becomes too
polished on TV it looks a bit wrong. The set designer was James Dillon and
he was really good as well, he was brilliant, he did some amazing stuff like
I really love the ape of death stuff and the Hitcher's box was incredible,
heÂ¹s really good. TheyÂ¹re all really amazing people that weÂ¹re using.
ChristineÂ and James DillonÂ and Paul, I think Paul did quite a good job.

Why did Paul King direct the series and not Steve Bendelack?

N Steve Bendelack just didnÂ¹t couldnÂ¹t do it so we had to get someone new
anyway but PaulÂ¹d been to see all the shows, heÂ¹s young, knows about the
boosh Â better to get someone like that than some old war-horse thatÂ¹d done
27 comedy series, do you know what I mean. I did like Bendelack and what he
did in the pilot but PaulÂ¹s a bit more young and you know, sort of, one of
our contemporaries rather than someone who knows how everything works. He
was sort of finding out himself, I know some of itÂ¹s a bit all over the shop
but at least weÂ¹re all learning together which I think is the best way. I
think the second series heÂ¹ll be much better as well and be more confident.

Noel Â will you be doing more stand up?

N id like to IÂ¹m skint so IÂ¹d like to do some. I havenÂ¹t really written that
much stuff but I have got a charity gig coming up, IÂ¹ve got a gig in
Brighton, IÂ¹ve got another one at Sohoho Â more at the store, the moose want
me to do some, especially cos when I did that gig I did some new material.,
I havenÂ¹t had the opportunity to write some new material cos weÂ¹re doing
this. Its so much stuff as well, itÂ¹s like 4 hours of stuff, writing a TV
show that you havenÂ¹t got any time to do anything else. And I donÂ¹t really
like doing stuff badly Â like when I did voodoo hedgehog I had to rally
concentrate on it for 6 months or 3 months and write some good stuff but I
get really frustrated just writing bits and bibs of stand up. I donÂ¹t have
any time to develop them. The only way to get good stand up is to write some
ideas, try them out, rewrite them, they evolve and you keep doing them and
then you have new ideas but you really need a lot of time. You cant just do
it every now and then or it doesnÂ¹t work, especially when youÂ¹re putting it
in a set with stuff thatÂ¹s really honed. IÂ¹d love to do a tour after, but we
want to do a live thing. Maybe I could do some stand up then,10 mins at the
beginning, Julian could do his 5 that he always did Â then the show then
some music at the end. IÂ¹ve been doing a bit of touring with the band I AM
X.

N LA yeah, then IÂ¹ve been to Belgium. Chris corner from the sneaker pimps,
its his band, theyÂ¹re called IMX, IÂ¹ve been doing a bit of that so that was
quite good fun. But I do like live stuff, I loved that gig at Sohoho cos I
hadnÂ¹t done one for ages, I was really nervous, I really enjoyed it. It was
bit surreal cos everyone was laughing at everything. Its hard to judge it.
ThatÂ¹s another thing is that I couldnÂ¹t really tell if they were laughing
cos they like the show or whether theyÂits just difficult, people start
getting to know you and they really want you to doÂ when you start everyone
wants you to be rubbish. I think they were all going we love your show Â

There was going to be a Xmas special of the Boosh but there isn't now - N&J are halfway through writing the Boosh so I guess realistically it wouldn't happen in time. Wasn't sure whether to tell you all or not cos its slightly disappointing but does mean the 2nd series will be finished sooner.

BBC 2 will be running the series in the autumn - they've still not set a date - and it will more than likely be pre-watershed (before 9pm - as part of the BBCs new drive for pre-watershed comedy).

Anything else I am saving for the Stuart Murphy interview which I am just putting the finishing touches to.

It's being filmed right now in Hoxton, London. Julian plays Dan, a friend of the main character, Nathan Barley.

Chris Morris has teamed up with the writer of www.tvgohome.com (Charlie Brooker), which was a fake Radio Times column published online every two weeks, fake in
that all the shows were made up but to look at it you'd think it was a cut out from Radio Times - it later became a book and a TV programme. It was scathing in its rants on all corners of society, especially the media. One of the shows was called Cunt; a show about a nasty, selfish, twat of a media whore, Nathan Barley, who fancies the pants of himself as he makes his own life and the life of
everyone around him progressively worse. It wasn't slapstick, just sick and highly bitter. So now they're making a sitcom around the idea. Chris Morris is directing and Charlie Brooker is the writer - although Morris inevitably would have had some input with the writing.

In one scene, Dan is walking down the street with paint, dirt, fag ends and a general mess over his hair and clothes. Nathan stops Dan in the street, much to Dan's annoyance, who does his best to get away from Nathan. Nathan then believes that Dan's mess is a new look and gets his hair cut with the same type of mess that Dan was sporting.

A zoo-illogical study by Richard Williams

If you thought the only reason for having BBC3 was the blank screen before 7pm then think again, because this week saw the start of something slightly different, something that will capture hearts and minds like a big fishing net full of guts and brains. Yes ladies and gentlemen, after years of waiting, The Mighty Boosh are finally on TV.

Formed several hundreds of years ago, The Mighty Boosh consist of Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt, two Œcomedians∂ who over the past six years have teamed up to produce some of the most surreal and funny moments ever seen on a stage.
Their first show, the aptly titled "Mighty Boosh", stormed the 1998 Edinburgh Festival winning the Perrier Best Newcomer Award. "Catch the vision, smell the dream." said an acceptant Noel. Featuring the zoo-keeping characters of Vince Noire (a squashed Elvis) and Howard Moon (a Leeds brute). The show originally ran in the upstairs theatre of the Hen & Chickens pub in Islington, then the world started to take notice and
Soon the boys were a global entity, jetting off to the Melbourne comedy festival and winning an Australian audience who remain fanatical to this day.

Without pausing for breath, they roped in Richard Herring (of Lee and Herring fame), paid him a directors fee and were off round the country with Artic Boosh, a show that featured Noire and Moon as bored postmen, sent on a mission to the frozen tundra to find the mythical egg of Mantumbi.
Along the way they encounter such characters as Uncle Pedro, a dancing Yetti and the terrifying Mr. Jiffy, described as a 10 foot mish mash of envelopes, bubble wrap and evil. More awards and more fans followed.

And then came Auto Boosh. In a previous life I used to work at The Tower Arts Centre in WInchester. We had booked the two previous shows and had loved them, so when the call came
asking us if we’d like a four night warm-up of the new piece, we jumped at the chance. It was quite some four nights.
Watching The Boosh spend hours working out ideas, changing characters and endlessly improvising was an amazing experience. On stage it looks effortless, but when you see the work they put in you can understand why Julian once said to me "Comedy... it ain’t f**king funny".

Later in the year when the show was at Edinburgh it had changed again, and it keeps changing, always by the seat of its pants. With The Boosh you never know quite where you are, and I doubt whether they do either. To those that give The Boosh a big thumbs up it was always a case of *when* rather than *if* they would get there own TV series. The only surprise is that it’s taken so long, but last year, buried away late at night was a half hour pilot show, which somehow captured the live Boosh experience and put a box round it. Inventive, funny, stupid and crazed, quite unlike anything
else you’ll see on your screens this year.

So first it’s BBC3, then it’ll transfer to BBC2 and by September Julian and Noel will be sitting on the Jonathan Ross sofa being hailed as geniuses. And, while it’s been a long hard slog, if The Boosh go supernova and end up
arrogant and drunk in a Las Vegas strip-joint then, frankly, no-one would have deserved it more. Two of the nicest guys you could ever wish to meet.

Steve Coogan and Henry Normal’s Baby Cow production company seems to have landed the contract to deliver almost half the comedy shows on TV at the moment, from Marion and Geoff to the new I am Not An Animal. Their latest offering is The Mighty Boosh (BBC Three), in which Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt take off where their Perrier award-winning show left off. They play Vince Noir and Howard Moon, two unconventional zookeepers at the surreal Zoo-Niverse.

It looks promising. Well, it looks different, certainly.

Knowing my taste in comedy, The Mighty Boosh (BBC3) will probably be the nation's favourite within six months, quoted in playground and parliament alike. I remained stonily unamused. Criticising a new comedy show is about as sporting as shooting fish in a barrel, but in this case the fish had it coming. The Mighty Boosh tried to be surreal and weird, but kept tripping over its awkward writing style ("You're about as edgy as a satsuma") and its self-congratulatory performance tone. There was a promising pastiche of The Island of Lost Souls in the second of the two introductory episodes, but it quickly degenerated into a lame musical number with breakdancing mutants, which looks funnier on paper than it really was.

There was one good visual joke about a moving shrub, but one laugh in an hour doesn't do it for me. But what do I know about comedy? I can't stand Only Fools and Horses either.

Fairy tales meet David Lynch in the surreal world of The Mighty Boosh, says Stephen Armstrong

A boxing lesson in the world of The Mighty Boosh: Julian Barratt is in full flow, jiving his floored opponent like a lanky white Ali: “I’m Howard Moon. I rain down the pain. I’m Monsoon Moon, comin’ atcha like a beam, like a ray, like a laser. Don’t try and stop me. I’m quick like lightning. I’m frightening.” His opponent lies unconscious in the centre of the ring: an eight-year-old boy with fake kangaroo ears. Switch to the big fight, and Barratt’s Moon is getting plastered by a fighting roo whose vast gloves are delivering his face a ferocious battering. He staggers into his corner, where his number two, Vince Noir (Noel Fielding), has bad news. “I’m not a boxing trainer,” he explains awkwardly. “I’m a French duke. That’s my uncle over there.” The camera pans to a pre-Revolutionary fop waving his handkerchief in polite acknowledgment.

Barratt and Fielding, The Mighty Boosh, are the latest team to sport British comedy’s glorious mantle of surreal tomfoolery. In the shadow of the Goons and Python, they have taken the silly, the beautiful and the strange and mixed them up for television viewers, kicking off on BBC3 on Tuesday, with a BBC2 transfer likely in the autumn. For the Boosh’s base of hip young fans, it’s about time.

The path to television seemed to start so well. Leeds-born Julian Barratt, 36, moved to London to become a comic in 1994. He met south Londoner Fielding, 30, after the latter started stalking his gigs in 1997. “My mate Liz said, ‘You’ve got to come and see this bloke,’” Fielding recalls. “She worded it quite nicely, ‘He talks absolute sh** like you do.’ I’d done a couple of gigs at college and was thinking, ‘What I’m doing, could it be anything?’ And I saw him and thought, ‘If he’s getting paid for that, I certainly can.’”

After spotting Fielding’s impressive barnet lurking at the back once too often, Barratt dared him to take the open-mike slot at his next gig. In true Hollywood fashion, Fielding’s act went down a storm, and Barratt, realising he had spawned a monster, promptly asked him if he wanted to write “the new Goodies”. “I gave him a lift home and asked to come in for a coffee,” Barratt recalls, “and he said, ‘You do know if you come in, you can never leave?’ I went, ‘Yeah, that’s fine.’ And he said, ‘No, you can never leave.’ It turns out he was telling the truth.”

They picked up a Perrier best newcomer award for their first stage show in 1998, titled The Mighty Boosh, and a grown-up nomination the following year for Arctic Boosh. Then they returned to the Smoke after 2000’s Auto Boosh and vanished. They had entered development hell.

“It was a bumpy old mess to get here,” Fielding says cheerfully when we meet in the cafe of an east London studio during filming. “Post-Edinburgh, we gigged around — Melbourne, Montreal, lots of talk of TV, but nothing ever materialised. So we had a wonky patch. Julian did a bit of acting and I played bass in IMX and did a solo show in Edinburgh, but we were waiting for the TV people to give us the go-ahead. It all just dragged on.”

Even once the show was commissioned, the world of television found itself unsure about their oeuvre. The duo shatter television’s fourth wall as often as they did in their live show, breaking off and chatting to the audience at home. TV-land didn’t approve. “People see you on stage, say we’d like to put it on TV and then go off and interview a load of housewives about you,” grumbles Barratt. “Suddenly, you’re at the behest of focus groups who say middle-aged sailors like the word ‘coin’ more than they like the word ‘broccoli’, so you should try and do some coin stuff, but then bring in the broccoli later for the housewives. You spend all this time working things out, and then people don’t trust you to do your job.”

At last, however, the show is ready, and it’s genuinely delightful. Set in a bizarre zoo run by the insane Bob Fossil, it features Moon and Noir as zookeepers with a certain amount of frustrated ambition. Plots usually involve the boastful but hapless Moon embarking on misguided schemes — boxing a kangaroo, finding a mysterious stone in the Arctic, solving animal kidnaps — and having to be rescued by chirpy cockney Noir. While most surreal comedy comes from a dark place filled with the grotesque and unsettling (see The League of Gentlemen), The Mighty Boosh is like a fairy tale directed by David Lynch, and could almost pass muster for 10-year-olds.

“Television these days is just endless houses filled with people I’ve never seen before, chatting on in really harshly lit kitchens,” says Fielding, an art-college graduate, explaining how this vision came about. “It makes me feel a bit ill. I want people to watch us and then feel the need to go off and do something. Painters that make you want to paint, they’re the best painters.”

The show is unlikely to achieve the status of The Office, but may be seen as more significant by those who care about such things. If this current glorious time of comedy creativity is a gag-based version of the 1960s, with The Office as the Beatles and Nighty Night as the Stones, the Boosh are early Pink Floyd, with their pastoral dandy charm and unusual choices.

This analogy doesn’t impress the boys, however. “I hate those comedy clichés,” says Barratt. “Someone said Lee Evans was like Norman Wisdom on acid, but if you actually watched Norman Wisdom on acid, it would just be watching a man slowly turning in on himself.”

“It’s hard to say what we’re like, because we’re not like anything,” Fielding adds. “That’s what I’m most proud of. At least it’s its own thing. If we did do a sitcom about an office, it wouldn’t be like The Office. They’d find a hole in the back of a cupboard that would take them all to another land.” Then they have to leave. Today’s project is releasing Moon from Monkey Hell, where he went to be punished for unnatural relations with a fox after Mr Death took him by accident. Welcome to the world of the Boosh.

A gentle wind of change
With a whimsical, family-friendly show, the boys from the Boosh are flying in the face of modern comedy. Bruce Dessau reports

Sometimes a comedy comes along that goes brilliantly against the flow. Reeves and Mortimer did it in the early 1990s, marking the end of the right-on era and the dawn of postmodern music hall surrealism. The Office did it a decade later, taking the gritty realism of the docusoap to its gloriously absurd conclusion. And now, with the small-screen grotesquerie of Nighty Night and Little Britain sweeping the nation, The Mighty Boosh arrives with a huge grin on its face, feeling like a veritable hurricane of fresh, uncynical air.

The creation of the Perrier-nominated performers Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt, this picaresque oddity charts the adventures of two hapless zookeepers. This Tuesday, for instance, Howard Moon (Barratt) is railroaded into boxing with a kangaroo, with Vince Noir (Fielding) as his trainer. It might be in a late-night BBC Three slot, but you could just as easily screen the fun as Sunday afternoon family fare.

Fielding, all excitable pixie demeanour and primped rock’n’roll hair, is delighted with this suggestion. “It has childlike honesty and innocence.” Their phantasmagorical baby is the antithesis of the meta-realism of The Office. “It doesn’t look like a documentary, it doesn’t make you cringe. I love that stuff, too, but it’s not what the Boosh is about. I’m more into The Arabian Nights.”

The more languid Barratt, who has a moustache and a sideline as a straight actor, appearing in Lucky Break with James Nesbitt and The Reckoning with Willem Dafoe, thinks it has junior appeal, too: “I used to like watching The Goodies with my Dad when I was young. I like the idea of every generation being able to get something out of it. I think we have combined lots of different elements.“ Sometimes there is so much going on in the programme that it is hard to contextualise it. The Boosh are undeniably the children of Vic and Bob, but the lineage is more complex. The Leeds-born Barratt also loves Frank Zappa, jazz and Monty Python. “Zappa wrote a lot of music about the tundra and in one episode we go to the Arctic.”

Fielding wanted to be a footballer when he was growing up in South London, but then he discovered art and European cinema. “I wanted it to be a cross between Jean Cocteau and The Singing Ringing Tree.”

The duo got together in the mid-1990s, having heard about each other’s quirky activities on the stand-up circuit. Fielding popped up at a poetry night in Chalk Farm at which Barratt was performing and they bonded. At one point they were going to call themselves different names each week, splutters Fielding between bites of baguette: “Hot Lego Wolves, Swan Priests. Lovepopes. But then we stuck with The Mighty Boosh. My brother Michael used to have really big hair and his friend used to call it a mighty bush.”

After three acclaimed Edinburgh shows, their radio transition picked up a Douglas Adams Award for Innovative Writing, which was particularly flattering because Fielding and Barratt were big fans of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: “I like that overarching narrative going through various characters,” says Barratt. BBC Three commissioned a pilot that went out last May and spawned the series, produced by Baby Cow (Steve Coogan’s production company, outlined in THE EYE’s profile last week).

Their biggest challenge was cramming all their ideas into eight 28-minute episodes. The first yarn alone takes in the aforementioned kangaroo punch-up, a love interest for Howard, the safari-suited zoo manager Bob Fossil (Rich Fulcher) explaining how he doesn’t like cricket via a rendition of 10cc’s Dreadlock Holiday, an Aboriginal dream sequence and the kind of goofball whimsy that Hope and Crosby used to specialise in in their Road To . . . movies.

“The challenge was balancing the comedy and the story. We were interested in narrative and making the weirdness work within a storyline,” says Barratt. They considered using other writers, but nobody was quite on their wavelength. “We have certain rules about levels of wrongness and stupidity, although we don’t know what they are.”

They painstakingly piece everything together themselves. The quickfire Ali-style opening banter for instance (“I’ll come at you fast like a northen bullet . . . like being caressed by a natural yoghurt”) might sound spontaneous but it is all scripted, explains Fielding. It can sometimes be a struggle to come up with the perfect surreal one-liner. “The battle goes one way then another, like trying to get through a narrow gap. When we agree it’s like, ‘yes, we’re in!’” The result is deliriously funny but as difficult to pin down as a will-o’-the-wisp. Even its creators are not sure if they’ve come up with a sitcom. “That’s hard. Is Mr Benn a sitcom?” muses Fielding. “It is set in the same place and we play the same characters, but anything can happen. We’re not trapped, which is supposed to be a sitcom law. We weren’t that interested in the detailed lives of zookeepers.”

BBC3 has already delivered two classy and original comedies in Little Britain and Nighty Night. This week the channel scores a hat-trick with the arrival of The Mighty Boosh.
The series - which, like Little Britain, first aired on Radio 4 - follows the fortunes of Vince (Noel Fielding) and Howard (Julian Barratt), a pair of zookeepers at the run down Zoo-niverse. Vince, who dresses like a 1970 rocker and describes himself as 'Mowgli in flares', is the most upbeat of the two and connects intuitively with animals. Howard, meanwhile, has the gloomy demeanor of an old-school thespian, and believes he was born for better things.
Together they embark on a series of adventures in the Arctic, the jungle and even ‘Monkey Hell’, trying their hand at anything from playing electro-pop to boxing kangaroos along the way. If it sounds confusing, then who better to explain than the stars themselves – starting with that peculiar name…
‘We wanted to sound like a band,’ says Barratt, who writes the music for the show. ‘Most comedy double acts are known by their names, so we thought let’s just call ourselves something abstract and weird.’
‘It’s difficult to say what it is,’ Fielding chips in. ‘It’s sort of Morcambe and Wise meets Beck, Mr Benn with drum and bass.’
‘We like the idea of those old Road movies with Bing Crosby and Bob Hope; two mates getting into scrapes in a weird environment,’ Barratt continues. ‘They’re quite flippant and playful, they talk to camera – not like a sitcom where you stay with it and you can’t break the reality. We like the idea of mucking around a bit.’
And when these Edinburgh Festival award-winners muck around, brace yourself for some strange goings-on.
‘We’ll start a really simple episode and then five minutes later, there’s a door in someone’s afro which leads to a world of slap bass players or something,’ says Barratt. Fielding nods. ‘We’re not very good at keeping it simple,’ he smiles.
Thus in The Mighty Boosh, when the duo are lost in the desolate wastes of the Arctic tundra, they break into a rap routine (‘Ice – floe – nowhere to go!’) before dancing with a polar bear and thawing out the last words of a frozen explorer. Watch it and you’ll get the picture.
Still searching for the perfect definition, Fielding recalls, ‘The best way it was ever described was by an old black blues player in Philadelphia. His band was performing in the same venue as us, and they used to hang around and catch our show. He said, ‘Man, it’s like you’re from the 1920s one minute, and from the future the next.’
Sounds mighty like the Boosh to us.

Face to faces: Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt

Howard Moon is preparing for a bout with a killer kangaroo. He doesn't want to fight, but Bob Fossil, his boss at the zoo, is convinced it'll pull in the punters. And Fossil has pictures of Moon's freakish naked torso to ensure his minion cooperates. Moon's raffish apprentice Vince Noir volunteers to train him up. But it'll take grit, muscle, one of Carlos Santana's old tracksuits and a puff of magic dust from a lisping shaman for Howard to knock out the fearsome Killeroo.

After years of waiting, The Mighty Boosh have finally made their first TV series. And, as the above plot synopsis suggests, it's utter nonsense. Which is a long way from being slack, or random. Julian Barratt (Howard) and Noel Fielding (Vince) have been doing this stuff for seven years now, ever since they played King Don's penis and Moby Dick respectively in a Stewart Lee show at Edinburgh. Fans and foes alie have accused the pair of just mucking about. But both tall, regal Yorkshireman Barratt and cockney peacock Feilding, winner of last year's Time Out Live Award for his solo show, take their delusions very seriously.

"What we didn't want", says Barratt, 35, "is a weird world with weird people in weird hats doing weird things. That just becomes tedious."

"But because everything we do is odd," says Fielding, 29, "everyone we work with thinks they know what it's about. They'll go, 'Oh yeah, you can be a giant in one of the shows, great!' And we'll go, 'No, it really doesn't work like that.'"

"It's a specific kind of nonsense," says Barratt.

"Vic Reeves always said that because it's nonsense people think it's easier than writing normal jokes," says Fielding. "Everyone goes, yeah, you just say anything, don't you? And he'd say to them, 'Go on, then, try and say something funny.' And they'd go, 'Oh, there's a cat and he's got a bag!!!' And he'd go, it's not funny, is it? Vic and Bob's stuff is always well written, they don't just pluck it out of air."

Reeves and Mortimer's skilful gibberish has certainly been a liberating influence on the Boosh. Legend also has it that, after working separately on the circuit, Barratt asked Fielding to join him to become 'the new Goodies'. But today, istting in their manager's Soho offices, they're less interested in allying themselves to their forebears. Still, they will tolerate comparisons to Monty Python, The Goons, Tony Hancock and, yes, The Goodies. "We love old double acts," offers Fielding. "We're Frank Zappa meets 'Stepford and Son'", ventures Barratt cautiously.

Their relationship on screen seems an only slightly cartoonified version of their relationship off. The softer-spoken Barratt is contained but dangerously sharp. Fielding is more upfront, more discursive. But they clearly adore spending time together. They lock eyes, play deft conversational ping-pong, and occasionally roar with laughter at each other's throwaway lines.

It's this blurring of the line between friendly backchat and double-act banter that gives the Boosh such an unusual, effective shtick. Their stage shows - fantastical no-budget adventures studded with the odd-couple enmity of their barely altered alter egoes - were an immediate cult hit. Their first Edinburgh show, in which they played two unlikely zookeepers, won Perrier Best Newcomer Award in 1998. The following year's show, in which they played two unlikely postmen, was nominated for the main prize. When they came back for 2000's Autoboosh, their entire run was sold out before the festival started. They were expected to win the Perrier, then didn't even get nominated. Feted for their anything-goes unpredictability, they were starting to second-guess themselves.

"We got to the stage of thinking, 'What is it we do? Well, we'd better do that again'", says Barratt.

"When we started it was word of mouth, 'Have you see the Boosh?'," says Fielding. "By the third time it wasw 'Well, this had better be good.' Edinburgh's all about the hype, and if you get a really big hype, what do you do after that?"

They haven't been back (though Fielding's solo show got him nominated for the Perrier in 2002). But they kept touring. "One year we did seven months away," says Fielding. "It was great, like being in a band or something. But after a few years of that, you go, oh, it'd be nice to put some of this down." So they concentrated on getting on TV. A series looked like shoo-in after their Fringe dominance. But shifting from theatres - where the rough staging was half the fun - to the literal-minded small screen proved harder than expected. They wrote a pilot for Channel 4, 'Boyz N The Wood', which had them living in a house surrounded by fusion guitarists and tree dwelling Monkey Nanas - white-haired granny apes in cardis. "There was no way we could have done that!" cackles Fielding. "It was like 'Lord of the Rings' or something."

They had more luck with a radio series recorded for BBC London then snaffled by Radio 4. But it was TV they wanted. After several false starts, it was only after bumping into Steve Coogan's production partner Henry Normal in the street that they put their extravagant visual ideas into affordable form. "It's useful to be backed by people who've made good comedy themselves," says Fielding. "People think of Coogan and they think of Alan Partridge."

"And lap-dancers."

"I think that helps."

So now, after last year's pilot, they're back with an eight-part series. The format is that of the radio show: two unlikely zookeepers have adventures - Barratt's brooding 'jazz maverick' and Fileding's Rod Stewart-haired chancer rubbing up against boss Bob Fossil (Rich Fulcher), the mystical Naboo (Fielding's brother Michael) and Zoo-Niverse owner Dixon Bainbridge (Matt berry out of 'Garth Marenghi').

On the evidence of 'Killeroo', it really works. It's funny and fast, referential but endearingly innocent. Whatever weird hats are being worn, it's always about Barratt and Fielding's relationship. They write each line together, playing their parts as they work. In fact, they can discuss the minutiae of their mutual playworld with a fluency that verges on the scary.

"We do talk about it as if it's real," admits Fielding. "But what's good is that it's two people who have different opinions and fight all the time."

"Billy Wilder said that if writing partners are too similar, it's like two people pulling on the same end of a rope," says Barratt.

They've written the treatment for a Boosh film in which Moon and Noir would be two unlikely archaeologists. They'd like to do another series, maybe a tour. Whatever The Mighty Boosh do together, though, it's sure to be seriously deluded. "Well, we can't really write anything straight," says Fielding. "I try sometimes - I think it'd be really good to do something ordinary. And then within a second there's always a talking cushion or something."

Gorillas, Arctic expeditions and men made of chamois leathers - prepare yourself for a weird new comedy world.

The first thing you notice when the Boosh walk in to the room is hair. Julian Barratt has multi-directional tendrils that writhe like snakes as he fiddles with them; his partner Noel Fielding has a fountain of blond, brown, purple and black stuff coming out of his head.

The second thing you notice is that they'd rather give a funny answer than a true one. "I'm a jazz fusion guitarist. I only ever listen to five albums by Weather Report. I dabble in comedy," Barratt says. He's actually an accomplished comic: the Boosh won the Perrier newcomer award at Edinburgh in 1998, and a Douglas Adams writing award for their radio series in 2001.

The third thing is that they only finish half the sentences they start, often abandoning them in favour of new, more exciting ones. This is most apparent when they try to define what The Mighty Boosh, their ultra-weird new series, is.

They play zookeepers who frequently leave their cages behind to go on quests - to the arctic, or even other dimensions. It's been labeled "tripcom" for its hallucinogenic qualities and is a departure from dark, suburban comedy, having more in common with Monty Python's anarchy and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy's astonishing creativity. Fielding explains: "We were living in Hackney, but we thought we'd rather live in a magical forest."

The show was born in the mid-1990s when Fielding and Barratt teamed up to do something different from conventional stand-up. "in our first show we came out covered in shaving foam and danced arounda s two white characters called the Hoop brothers," claims Fielding.

Edinburgh in 1999 saw Barratt playing a monster made out of Jiffy bags. "We were working in a post office," he says. "So it's not illogical to have a boss made out of Jiffy bags."

The TV series features more DIY monsters. In one episode, Fielding falls through a mirror and meets a man made of chamois leathers and sponges. But Boosh is not simply a freak show - it boasts plenty of unhinged exchanges between Fielding's idiot savant and Barratt's intellectually arrogant fool, both characters based closely on their own personalities.

For a long time, TV was wary of the Boosh. "If you do weird stuff," says Fielding, "they think, 'You're mad, you probably eat chairs.'"

The fourth thing you realise when the Boosh are in the room is that you can't stop laughing.

Insane Animal Antics

At last! New comedy that could finally kill of the withdrawl pangs you’ve been suffering since Little Britain and Nighty Night finished their recently acclaimed runs. Set in a run-down zoo, "Zooniverse", this surreal show focuses on two of the zookeepers, would-be genius Howard Moon (Julian Barratt) and his sweet natured chum Vince Noir (Noel Fielding).
The pair undertake the sort of adventures their real-life counterparts could only dream about – taxi rides to Hell, journeys into the jungle and even a trip to the Arctic. Add in some battles with mod wolves and an angry boxing kangaroo and you’ve got the warped ingredients for one of the maddest sitcoms of all time.
The Mighty Boosh comes fighting out of Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow stable and Barratt has stressed how important the Alan Partridge star has been to the show.
"He (Coogan) saw us at the Edinburgh Fringe, where everyone thought we were a bit abstract, that we were going to come on dressed in foil or something," he told Nuts. "Coogan saw the mainstream possibillities. He helped a lot."
As you would expect, there’s a supporting cast of quirky characters ranging from Naboo, the enigmatic mystery man who runs the kiosk, to demented disco-loving American zoo manager Bob Fossil.
So how did Barratt and Fielding come up with such inspired lunacy?
"We listen to a lot of music. The series was written under the influence of Carlos Santana," said Barratt. No drugs then?
"Um… quite a lot of coffee. I mean people ask that, but it was mainly coffee. Honest."
